The Pleyels saw the year in at beautiful Gregynog near Newtown in Wales where we gave five concerts to an audience of guests on John Whibley’s “Holidays with Music” . The first concert featured Sarah Ewins, Heather Bills, Harvey Davies and Janet Hilton and we played Mozart Bb trio, Brahms clarinet trio and Dvořák’s Dumky Trio. The following day there were two concerts; at midday Sarah and Harvey played Mozart Sonata, K. 296 in C, Elgar’s violin sonata, Op. 82 and the Balkan Dances by Marko Tajčević for clarinet, violin and piano. The evening concert was without piano; Heather played Bach G major Suite on her Classical ‘cello (made by Kai-Thomas Roth) and this was followed by Martinu Madrigals, Villa-Lobos “The Jet Whistle” and the wonderful Dohnányi String Trio. Sarah and Heather were joined by Susie Mészáros and Jonathan Rimmer (viola and flute respectively).
Having seen the New Year in after the concert and dinner, the 1st January 2017 was graced by a further two concerts: flute sonatas by Telemann and Bach in B minor and the Milhaud Suite at lunchtime and the grand finale in the evening was the piano quartets in Eb by Mozart and Schumann followed by the evergreen “Trout Quintet”. We were delighted to be joined by the BBC Philharmonic’s Principal bass player, Dan Whibley for Schubert’s masterpiece.
What a fantastic way to spend the New Year! Gregynog’s management and catering staff could hardly have made us more welcome, the weather was kind and the guests very appreciative. Many thanks to John and Helen Whibley for their expertise and kindness and here’s to an auspicious start to 2017!
