Description

Today’s Schubert is the stunning piano trio in B flat major D898 from 1827, written near the end of the composer’s life. This enormous and majestic work is typical of Schubert’s late style: it pushes boundaries of tonality, extends Classical form to its limits and is full of beauty and melody. We also play the third of a set of Pleyel piano trios that we are to record in December. This one is in E flat major and is assigned the number 439 in Rita Benton’s catalogue of the works of Ignaz Pleyel. To complete the programme is the gorgeous ‘Lento’ movement from Cécile Chaminade’s piano trio no. 2, Op. 34 of 1887.
